Next Generation Science Standards- Support for English Language Learners

The Stanford University site- Understanding Language is dedicated to raising awareness of the critical role that language plays in the new Common Core State Standards and upcoming Next Generation Science Standards.

The site has a paper titled:

Language Demands and Opportunities in Relation to Next Generation Science Standards for ELLs

This paper describes challenges and opportunities as we engage ELLs with the Next Generation Science Standards. The paper highlights 4 of the 8 Practices of Science and Engineering as a focus for English Language Learners:

  • Developing and Using Models
  • Developing Explanations (for Science) and Designing Solutions (for Engineering).
  • Engaging in Argument from Evidence.
  • Obtaining, Evaluating and Communicating Information
