It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Page Keeley’s work on formative assessment probes. The latest volume of probes, unlike previous volumes, has a specific content focus… Force & Motion. Uncovering Student Ideas in Physical Science, Vol. 1: 45 New Force and Motion Assessment Probes features the usual in-depth front matter on formative assessment plus 45 engaging probes for uncovering what students already know (or think they know) about force and motion concepts. Each probe is followed by the usual scientific explanation plus links to standards, common misconceptions at grade bands, and ideas for modifying instruction.

If you are interested you can download a pdf of the Introduction plus one probe- Just Rolling Along. You can also preview the book on Google Books where you can see several of the probes and make an informed decision on whether to purchase the book from NSTA.

I’m glad this post was helpful. There are also wonderful physical science probes in the previous Vol. 1-4 of Uncovering Student Ideas in Science- I have used many with adults and kids.
    Enjoy!
