Recent conversations with science educators of various levels (K-20) have reminded me that there are a multitude of ways that teachers use science notebooks with students. In the coming days, I will be sharing some of my favorite Science Notebook resources. My hope is that if you are only using science notebooks for “lab report” style entries you may find ways to extend the use of Science Notebooks as teaching, learning, and assessment tools.
Today I want to share an excellent online resource- sciencenotebooks.org. This site demonstrates several features of Science Notebooks and has great samples of student entries.
Applications for Science Teachers: This site provides great examples of different types of Science Notebook entries. These real student entries could be used as models during mini-lessons. The Classroom Tools tab contains templates, rubrics for assessment, and tools for introductory lessons. There are even examples of notebook entries from real working scientists.
