I recently had a wonderful opportunity to teach a science methods course to 60 pre-service elementary teachers. The first assignment to the class was a Science Autobiography- I wanted to know about their prior experiences, both good and bad with science instruction. I was surprised to find that many of these adult learners reported having negative experiences in science classes- and the #1 culprit of “science trauma” was the dissection.
While many of us self-proclaimed science geeks loved this experience in school we must consider the impact of these experience on all learners.
This is just a reminder about a great tech resource at froguts.com to provide students with virtual dissections. Perhaps this tool can provide the same science content without the unintended take home message that science = yuck!
